Budgeting & Money Apps That Don't Require Linking Your Bank Account

Most finance apps are useless until you hand over your bank credentials. Here are the ones that work without — and why that trade matters.

Open almost any personal finance app and the first screen is the same: "Connect your bank to get started." For a lot of people that's a hard stop — not paranoia, just a reasonable unwillingness to share bank credentials with a third party they met ninety seconds ago. If that's you, this guide is the list you were looking for: the realistic ways to track your money without linking a bank account, and the honest trade-offs of each.

Why apps want the bank link (and what you're trading)

Bank linking runs through aggregators — Plaid, MX, Finicity — which sit between your bank and the app, refreshing your transactions automatically. It's convenient and widely used, but the trade is real: a third party holds credentials or tokens for your accounts, connections break and need re-authentication, and in the free-app era the data flowing through was often part of the business model. (That story has a famous ending — see Why Mint Died.)

The alternative input is one banks have offered for decades: the CSV export. Same data, downloaded by you, from your bank's own website, shared with no one. The question is what tool turns that file into understanding.

The options, ranked

1. Piggey — CSV in, AI-built clarity out

Piggey is built specifically for this model: no bank connection exists anywhere in the product. You export a CSV from your bank and the AI categorizes your entire history at once, surfaces spending trends, and detects recurring subscriptions. Penny, the AI assistant, answers plain-English questions about your money. Free for the core loop; Pro is $16/mo (first month free).

Trade-off: the monthly export is a one-minute manual habit. That's the entire cost of not sharing credentials.

2. YNAB in manual mode — budgeting without the link

YNAB supports linked accounts but doesn't require them — manual entry and file import are first-class citizens, and a chunk of the YNAB community runs fully unlinked on principle. If you want envelope budgeting without bank linking, this is your tool. Trade-offs: $109/yr, and manual mode means manually entering or importing everything, forever, on top of the budgeting method itself.

3. The spreadsheet — total privacy, total labor

Maximum control, zero third parties, completely free — and you are the entire automation layer. Categorizing by hand is where most spreadsheet systems quietly die around week six. Our affectionate autopsy: Piggey vs Spreadsheets.

4. Pen, paper, and bank statements — the analog classic

Cheap, private, and genuinely effective for building awareness over a month or two. Doesn't scale, can't answer questions, and most people stop after the novelty fades. Fine as a reset ritual; rough as a system.

What about the big names?

Worth stating plainly, because people search for it: Monarch, Copilot, Rocket Money, PocketGuard, and Empower are all built around the bank link. Some technically allow manual accounts, but the product experience assumes sync — unlinked, you're fighting the design. If no-bank-login is your requirement, choose a tool where it's the point, not the workaround.

The one-minute privacy habit

The entire no-link workflow, monthly: log into your bank → download the CSV → drop it into your tool of choice. With Piggey the AI does the categorizing from there; with YNAB you budget; with the spreadsheet you're the engine. One minute of manual work buys you out of the aggregator ecosystem entirely — credentials never shared, nothing to breach, nothing to re-link.
